How Does Stress Affect Health (continued)

One such result is the effect of stress on the immune system and how it will actually decreases in effectiveness.

The thinking here is; if once those chemicals are depleted by your body constantly over reacting, they can't readily be produced again when there is a proper need for them. In some circles of though, it is believed that this resulting depletion leads to a higher susceptibility to infection and even a lowering tolerance and resistance to common colds and other virus induced illnesses.

Another side effect of this low level of bodily chemical can manifest itself as general fatigue and even more seriously - sometimes depression.

In addition, another ramification on one’s health reflected by chronic stress can be a deleterious affect on the circulatory system. When the stress hormones released by the 'fight or flight' trigger don't get properly consumed by the body via physical activity, they can cause actual physiological stress on the body.

High blood pressure elevates the physical tension on the walls of your blood vessels that can result in very tiny tears or damage to the blood vessels. When the body reacts to heal this damage the result can be a certain amount of scar tissue. This scar tissue reduces the ease in which the flow of blood can pass through them.

If stress is constantly present for a long period of time or carried to an extreme, heart attacks can occur (this risk is greater for those a more natural susceptibility due to genetics or age).

Stress has long been known to have a worsening effect on rheumatoid arthritis. As research develops the link between this condition and the immune system; it has become better understood.

It is important to be mindful of your physical and mental well-being. If you feel as though you are constantly under attack from stress you should learn and begin to practice techniques to lower it. Adopting a philosophy that helps minimize stress in your life is a positive preventative step in your well being… and your health.
