Symptoms & Causes Of Stress

Identifying the causes of stress is difficult simply because that the causes of stress within any individual can be nearly anything at all and differ from person to person.

Universally speaking – life time events such as; losing one’s job, dissolving a close relationship, an unforeseen health problem, etc. In today’s world there are no shortages of possible stress initiators all the way from the causes of adult stress, college student stress, the causes of teen stress, and unfortunately even younger.

The level at which stress that affects you is personal. Two different people under the same stressful environment will react to stress differently – both internally and externally. Some people will be anxious, while others will be stoic. Some people even seem thrive on challenges, competition, and even uncertainty, while others struggle to handle even minor changes in their lives or daily routines.

The specific causes are neither entirely external nor internal, but generally involve both.

Losing one’s job can certainly be a reason for stress. Closely tied to the loss of one’s job is one’s income. As person may sees their income drop and wonders where the next paycheck is going to come from the initial feeling of stress is present and poised to become even greater. Even if another job opportunity is swiftly forthcoming, and even if in the same job market, the change alone that comes with a job or career change can weigh heavily on you.

Similar stress can be evoked as a result of dissolving or the termination of a close relationship. Reactions vary because individuals are unique as each individual internalizes their experiences differently. Again, as in the case of a job loss, the one common component here that acts as a stress agent is ‘change’.

The underlying causes of stress often have less to do with the external circumstances than an individual's expectations for the future and their evaluation of their own capacity to meet them.

The causes of stress and the degree and length of time it's felt are a function of several factors. One of the major factors is the attitude of the person in the given situation. If you feel you can overcome serious hurdles quickly or without major loss, you will evaluate fewer external events as a cause for stress. When you do experience it, the degree of stress will be less.
